April 15, 2020 — Associated Builders and Contractors has recognized Hometown Plumbing & Heating’s work on the Gordon-Van Tine project in Davenport, Iowa with a national Excellence in Construction® Eagle Award. The award will be presented during ABC Convention 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee, on Aug. 18. The EIC awards program is the industry’s leading competition that honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects.
Mike O’Day, President of Hometown Plumbing & Heating and 2019 ABC of Iowa Board Chairman, recognizes the prestigious nature of being honored with a national Eagle Award. “This award is a testament to the craftsmanship and work ethic of our employees. The Gordon-Van Tine project presented a unique set of challenges and circumstances that our team navigated on a daily basis. I couldn’t be more proud of the effort put forth by everyone on this project and we are excited to celebrate our achievement in Nashville this summer.”
Hometown Plumbing & Heating was contracted to provide a complete plumbing system for renovation of the historic, 110-year-old Gordon-Van Tine Lofts in Davenport, Iowa. They began working in January 2018 and over a 17-month span, the abandoned factory buildings were transformed into a 113-unit apartment complex. The five-story building contains 95 apartment units while the four-story building includes an additional 18. The project was Davenport’s largest apartment renovation in 20 years and presented many unique challenges along the way.
“The craftsmanship of Hometown Plumbing & Heating and their hardworking employees continues to raise the bar when it comes to how we define excellence in construction,” said 2020 ABC National Chair Tim Keating, owner and president of R.C. Stevens Construction Co., Winter Garden, Florida. “It’s an honor to recognize these award winners for their respective commitments to building safely, on time and on budget, as well as contribute to the communities in which they work.”
The EIC award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.
This year’s panel included representatives from Building Owners and Managers Association International, Smithsonian Facilities Construction Division, Construction Management Association of America, Engineering News-Record, Design-Build Institute of America and various construction-related firms nationwide.
